The OS and hardware considerations are really passe in this day and age. There is nothing of interest to Apple there, no synergies to speak of.

Cheers,

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the comments.

I guess Apple never felt the need for such a partnership. Do you not think that if Oracle tries to mess too much with MySQL, it will just result in a code fork and the emergence of a non-Oracle version?

As a person who uses open source pretty much exclusively for my web services, I am concerned about Oracle owning MySQL. MySQL has served me well as the backend database to almost all that I do, outside of my full-time job.
On the other hand, MySQL might be the only thing safe with a Sun acquisition. Frankly I think Oracle Sun Servers will go the way of Oracle's NetAppliance.

I'm surprised that Apple and Sun never got together. Two Unix based companies that had complimentenary positions in their respective markets.

I have commented on possible scenarios in my blog post on the acquisition here at: http://subbaiyer.wordpress.com/2009/04/20/oracle-acquires-sun-unexpected-and-interesting/

I would believe the first casualty in this acquisition would be MySQL. Recently some of the founders and key people at MySQL have already quit due to frustration at not having their way from Sun.
Left to Oracle itself, they would kill MySQL. But surprisingly My SQL has a strong user base, developer network and hence Oracle may face a push back. So, let's watch.
Unlike other acquisitions, this one looks more difficult.
