Hi Tim,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment.

Dashboard proliferation worries me. How many dashboards does an aeroplane need?

On KPIs I guess in reality many of them are perhaps just PIs, of interest to some (those who want the dashboard) but not all.

I think that there should be alignment between true Enterprise KPIs and analysis facilities. In the in between world that I think you are describing (please correct me if I am wrong), then I agree that maybe taking too purist a cube-based approach could be tough work.

Peter,
This is a great article. I have been doing dashboarding for a while and getting these concepts across to managing/sponsoring members is the "BIGGEST" part of the undertaking... but we still find ourselves having to develop dashboards that don't have any enterprise enforced consisitents measures and targets at common levels across KPI's.

For this same reason when dealing with disparate KPI's with ragged hierachies and multiple measures with different formats currency, decimals, percentages etc...

I strongly recommend against using cubes as sources for Dashboards because getting the cube to align and deal with different measures across different grains with targets and actuals that are calculated differently at different levels is more work inside a cube beating up its intended purpose than just managing isolated structures dedicated to serving up metric/KPI oriented content at different levels.

Peter,
Thanks for linking this to your post about Maureen's article as I missed it when you first posted it. Your thoughts on dashboards resonnate with me. In my company there's a good amount of buzz around dashboards and I'm trying to ensure we embrace the enthusiasm for these decision tools while taking a practical approach to implementing them. This post is helpful in crystalizing our plans.

Hi Michele,

I think it's pretty important to have targeted, manageable schema (at least at the Data Mart level) otherwise it all becomes much too unwieldy.
